On September 3, 2005 we all lost a very close friend, Joe Brown who worked at QUBS from 1979 to 1983 and then went on to a distinguished career at the Ocean Sciences Centre of Memorial University in St. John's, Nfld.  On July 2, 2006 some of Joe's friends gathered during QUBS' 60th anniversary celebration to drink a few (!) toasts to him and dedicate a shagbark hickory tree ("Spike") in his memory.
