The Italian program at UTM is designed to provide a comprehensive study of the many facets of Italy, a country whose culture continues to be a significant force in the shaping of Western civilization. Literature and cinema courses are organized around major figures, movements or genres, as well as Italian life and civilization. Language is studied from all points of view - practical, stylistic, philological and historical - at all levels of instruction.

In Canada, the strong presence of large Italian communities provides a social, intellectual and practical incentive for the study of Italian. Students are free to design for themselves the program of study best suited to their interests and needs, and they can choose from available courses at UTM and at the St. George campus. There are conditions, however, which must be satisfied for:

• specialization in Italian alone or in Language Teaching and Learning
• a Major in Italian alone or Italian and French
• a Major in Language Teaching and Learning in Italian alone or Italian and French
• a Minor in Italian alone or in Cinema Studies
• a Specialist in International Affairs, which requires a language component

Knowledge of another language and culture is regarded favourably by other disciplines (i.e. Art History, Art and Art History) and is frequently required for graduate-level studies. Graduates in Italian are in demand and will continue to be. Italian graduates of UTM have moved on to advanced studies and to careers in business, journalism, teaching, translation, transportation, foreign affairs, government, social services, trade, law, and other fields where skills in Italian are a necessity.
