Introduction to Archaeological Field & Laboratory Methods
2004
COURSE INFORMATION
Course Description
The objective of the course is to give students a basic grounding in the techniques and methods employed by archaeologists to extract data from an archaeological site and to process these data in the laboratory. Because archaeological data collection is time-consuming and requires learning a number of different techniques, the first part of the course will consist of two weeks of field instruction (Aug. 23 - Sep 3, 2004). Instruction during the field session will deal with excavation practices, data recording, flotation, mapping, and photography. The rest of the term will be devoted to weekly laboratory sessions, that will concentrate on washing and cataloguing the artifacts excavated.
Students must be available for both field and laboratory sessions.
The excavations will most likely take place at a prehistoric native site within commuting distance of UTM. Students will commute to and from the site daily and will be responsible for transportation. A car pool will be organized from the Erindale campus. All excavation equipment will be supplied. Students must buy a field book and supply CSA approved steel-toed work-boots & work-gloves. An ancillary fee of approximately $25 to cover the cost of a chemical toilet and miscellaneous other minor expenses may also be applied.
Instructions
Students must have prior approval of the instructor to register in the
course. Application for approval must be done by submission of an application
form (available by web or from the department in March, 2004). Deadline
for submission of the form and a current ROSI transcript is Mar 26, 2004.
Admission will be based on area of concentration, academic standing, course
background and/or previous courses. The list of successful candidates will
be posted in April, 2004.
Important Note
Failure to provide full and accurate information on the application form will result in your name being removed from consideration for the course.
