Volunteer Positions 2007 - 2008

Reader

Description:

In scheduled sessions the Volunteers come in for 1-3 hours a week and record textbook chapters and journal articles onto cassette tapes for students with visual disabilities.

Skills:

  • Able to read academic texts clearly and accurately
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • A genuine commitment to providing unobtrusive support to assist students with disabilities to achieve their goals
  • Awareness of and respect for the rights of students with disabilities; and

Training:

New volunteers are asked to do a short test read and, if accepted, are given full training in recording to the AccessAbility Resource Centre’s standards. The Centre staff are always available during the recording sessions to answer any queries and to give regular feedback to volunteers. There are also training workshops on various aspects of recording (e.g. using the technology) and all volunteers are eligible to participate in the Leading Towards Inclusion Certficate Program

Library Assistant

Description: 

A Library Assistant provides services to students with disabilities utilizing the library resources of the Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre.  Volunteers assist students with retrieving books, reading articles to students, using the accessible photocopier and using the UT Libraries online catalogue.  The volunteer also assists the Volunteer Coordinator with updating the Centre’s online and print resources.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Awareness of and respect for the rights of students with disabilities; and
  • Commitment to the principles of equity and inclusion

Training:

New volunteers are given full training in providing supports to students and the AccessAbility Resource Centre’s policies and guidelines.

The Centre staff are always available during office hours to answer any queries and to give regular feedback to volunteers. All volunteers are eligible to participate in the Leading Towards Inclusion Certficate Program

Note-Taker

Description: 

To facilitate access to academic study for students with disabilities by taking notes in formal lectures, seminars and other learning environments and supplying notes within the specified time.

Skills:

  • Good clear hand writing
  • Good language and vocabulary skills
  • Atrong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Awareness of and respect for the rights of students with disabilities; and
  • Commitment to the principles of equity and inclusion

Training:

New volunteers are given full training in providing supports to students and the AccessAbility Resource Centre’s policies and guidelines.

The Centre staff are always available during office hours to answer any queries and to give regular feedback to volunteers. All volunteers are eligible to participate in the Leading Towards Inclusion Certficate Program

Study Partner

Description: 

To assist students with disabilities in studying for tests / exams by reviewing notes, textbooks and other course related material. Please note that this is not a tutoring position.

Skills:

  • Currently or previously enrolled in the student’s program/ course of study
  • Atrong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Awareness of and respect for the rights of students with disabilities; and
  • Commitment to the principles of equity and inclusion

Training:

Special Events Assistant

Description: 

To assist the AccessAbility Resource Centre and other campus departments in advertising, setting up, participating in and taking down of events on campus (e.g. First Year Orientation, Get Experience Fair, March Break Open House, Volunteer Recognition Ceremony and Take your Kids to Work Day.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Awareness of and respect for the rights of students with disabilities; and
  • Commitment to the principles of equity and inclusion

Training:

New volunteers are given full training in providing supports to students and the AccessAbility Resource Centre’s policies and guidelines.
