Congratulations to UTM Students at CSM Conference 2011!
We would like to extend our congratulations to Elvin De Araujo, Varun Gupta, Michael Preston, and Michahel Staniewski, who’s abstracts were selected for oral presentations at the 2011 Canadian Society for Microbiologists (CSM) Conference on June 20th to 23rd 2011 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

UTM represented four of only twelve students selected to compete in the Student Symposium Competition and two of our students (Michael Preston in the Department of Geography and Michael Staniewski in the Department of Biology) won an award for their excellent presentations. Michael Preston won the ASM Student Award (American Society for Microbiology) for best oral presentation, and Michael Staniewski won the ISME-8 Student Award for the best presentation in Microbial Ecology (awarded by the Atlantic Canada Society for Microbial Ecology). Both of these student awards are highly competitive and are accompanied with a cash prize.
Please see below for a description of the graduate students and their written abstracts prepared for the Student Symposium Competition.
