Community Environment Alliance
Community Environment Alliance (CEA)
Description: The CEA is “a registered, non-profit, community based organization dedicated to promoting sustainability through education and empowerment at the grassroots level.” The CEA offers a wide array of services for the residents of the Peel Region aimed at environmental education, alleviation of poverty, promotion of social equality and strengthening our local economy.
What they need from us: CEA has started growing local organic food in a community farm and in a school community garden with an objective to help low-income families to access fresh produce. CEA is looking to scale up the community food growing program to increase its impact. Our team will research similar programs in different countries around the world and identify transferable initiatives to suit Ontario’s economic, social and environmental conditions. The team will also develop strategies to implement a sustainable food growing model.
Who should apply: We are looking for a dedicated group of 5 to 8 students from all disciplines, especially those in environmental science, communications, marketing, psychology, sociology and anthropology. However, students of all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Students applying are expected to commit to weekly meetings, required presentations and any supplementary gatherings. The time commitment per week is approximately 2-3 hours.
General info: The project will begin with an orientation and training session with your fellow teammates and a representative from the organization in February. The team will then meet to work towards a deadline in April. The team will eventually present their project to the board of directors of the organization and get feedback on their presentation. At the end of the project, members are expected to take part in a focus group in April.
