Experiential Learning

The Department of Sociology offers an exciting internship course, SOC480Y5 Y, which is an experiential learning and work placement course aimed at helping our senior students in Sociology and Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies programs establish contacts in the industry, gain useful career skills, and make the transition from undergraduate to professional or post-graduate life.  Students complete 200 hours of unpaid work during the academic year (i.e. one day per week between September and April.)

SOC450H5 Inside-Out:  Prisons and Punishment

A second course falling loosely under the banner of experiential-learning is Soc 450 (Inside Out: Prisons and Punishment). This course matches a group of UTM students ("outside" students) with an approximately equal number of incarcerated students ("inside" students) who study together as peers at an off-campus setting. Topics vary from term to term, but revolve around questions of punishment, prisons, and governance. With the exception of the first week, all class sessions are held inside the institution (e.g., penitentiary, detention centre, halfway house, etc.). Inside and outside students work together on small teams to develop and present a final project.

We hope to next offer Soc 450 in the fall 2013 term. Those interested in applying should fill out this application which is due 15 March 2013. Applications should be sent (as Word or PDF attachments) to Prof. Phil Goodman at p.goodman@utoronto.ca.
