1. How do I petition?
A petition is a written request for waiver of a particular regulation. Petitions are submitted by completing an online petition form.
Petitions are reviewed in confidence by or on behalf of the Committee on Standing. It is up to the student (the petitioner) to demonstrate the validity of the request and to provide any appropriate documentation. The Committee may refuse any petition, deciding that reasons provided do not support the request made.
2. How do I find out the status of my petition?
All petition decisions are given to student via e-mail at their UTOR accounts. Students are responsible, however, for checking their status on the online petition system.
*Make sure your e-mail address is up-to-date on ROSI.
3. How long will it take to process my petition?
Providing that all appropriate documentation has been submitted and depending on the type of petition, it can take anywhere from one day to two to three weeks.
4. What is the deadline to petition?
The deadlines depend on the nature of the petition. Check the Petitions section of the website regularly for petition submission deadlines.
5. How do I defer my exam?
In case of illness or duress at the time of an exam, an affected student should consider not writing, should seek medical documentation on the day of the exam (or the day after at the latest), and petition to defer the exam. Students are also required to declare their absence on ROSI on the day of the examination (or by the day after at the latest).
Petitions must be filed within 72 hours of the missed exam. Please note — students will not be allowed to petition to rewrite an exam, or request late withdraw if you have already written the final exam or final term paper.
Petitions must be supported by documentation. Late petitions will be rejected.
6. How much is the deferred exam fee?
Students will be required to pay a fee of $70 for each deferred exam. Students must pay for U of T Mississauga exams at the U of T Mississauga campus. U of T Mississauga students who are writing a St. George or U of T Scarborough exam, must pay for these exams at the respective campus on which the course is being offered.
7. How do I withdraw from my course after the drop deadline?
Petitions requesting late withdrawal from a course must be filed six months after the end of the session in which the course is taken. Students cannot petition for a late withdrawal from a course if they have written a final exam, a final term test or the degree is conferred. Students must show, through supporting documentation, that extenuating circumstances prevent them from completing the course. Watch this quick video for further information.
8. When will my grade be available for my deferred/special exam?
As soon as the grade has been submitted by the department to the Office of the Registrar.
9. The exam timetable is not posted but I need to book a flight home. How do I petition to defer my exam or write early?
The exam period is published in the Academic Calendar (available in early April) and students are expected to be available to write exams during the entire exam period. No petitions will be accepted for special or deferred exam to accommodate personal and/or vacation plans, or employment obligations. Students who make personal commitments during the exam period do so at their own risk.
10. Are there any other options for dropping a course after the drop deadline?
Yes. Students may drop a course after the deadline for withdrawal but before the last day of classes, by requesting LWD status. LWD can be used on up to 3.0 credits in a 20.0 credit degree. Click here to request the LWD option.
