Programs Offered

Psychology at UTM offers one Minor program, two Major programs, and three Specialist programs.  We also contribute to the Concurrent Teacher Education Program (CTEP) and to one additional Specialist Program hosted by the Forensic Science Program.  As a broad discipline that includes the life sciences (neurobiology, genetics of behaviour etc.), the social sciences (e.g., personality, social behaviour), as well as cognitive science (e.g., perception, cognition, language and communication), our programs and course offerings reflect this breadth as follows:

  • The Psychology Minor, Major, and Specialist programs offer different levels of concentration in all core areas of psychology including research methods and statistics.  The Specialist program, in particular, provides excellent preparation for students who intend to pursue graduate studies in psychology.
     
  • The Behaviour, Genetics, and Neurobiology (BGNB) Specialist program is an interdisciplinary program that combines psychology with life science courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics to provide excellent preparation for graduate studies in the neurosciences.
     
  • The Exceptionality in Human Learning (EHL) Major and Specialist programs are interdisciplinary programs that provide different levels of concentration in human development (typical and atypical), abnormal behaviour, and disability issues.  In particular, the EHL Specialist program, which culminates in our Practicum in Exceptionality seminar, provides excellent preparation for students interested in graduate studies in education, social work, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, and related areas.
  • Concurrent Teacher Education Program (CTEP) (exceptional learners) is a 5-year combined Honours B.Sc./B.Ed. program that prepares students for primary-junior and/or special education teaching careers in the public school system.  It is unique in the sense that students are required to complete a major in Psychology or EHL and thus enter their teaching career with a strong background in child development, which will be extremely helpful in their future careers.
     
  • The Forensic Psychology Specialist program of study is administered by the Forensic Science program and provides an excellent option for students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies in this specific area.

All Psychology programs are "Type 2" SubjectPOSts (programs of study) and require specific courses and CGPAs. For information on Type 2 programs consult the Registration Guide.
