Missed Tests/Late Submissions
What do I do if I miss a term test in my Psychology Course?
Students who miss a test due to circumstances beyond their control (e.g. illness or an accident) can request that the Department grant them special consideration. You must present your case to the Department (not the Instructor) by completing an online Special Consideration Request. The request can be submitted using the online form at https://utmapp.utm.utoronto.ca/SpecialRequest.
NOTE: This application currently supports Internet Explorer and Firefox ONLY
Original supporting documentation (e.g. a medical certificate, accident report, etc.) is to be brought to Jodie Stewart, Academic Counsellor located in the Psychology Office Room 2037B or dropped in the drop-box located outside the Psychology Office.
Deadlines
You have up to one (1) week from the date of the missed test to submit your request (late requests will NOT be considered without a "letter of explanation" as to why the request is late).
Decisions
A departmental committee evaluates each request, and provides the Academic Counselor with the decision. You will be contacted by the Academic Counselor, who will inform you of the decision.
Note: Although the Academic Counselor will make every effort to inform you of the committee' decision by e-mail, it is your responsibility to ensure you obtain a decision from the department. Claims that a departmental decision was not received will NOT be considered as a reason for further consideration.
Make-up Tests
If your decision is GRANTED and a make-up test is required, you will write within 2 weeks of the original test date. The Academic Counselor will contact you when a make-up date has been arranged. The department will try to give 2-3 days notice of make-up date, however this is sometimes not possible. Be prepared for the make-up.
Redistribution of Grades
If your decision is GRANTED and a make-up test is not available, a redistribution of your grades will apply. Feel free to contact your instructor on how your marks will be redistributed.
Medical Documentation
A medical certificate or doctor's note MUST include the statement "This Student was unable to write the test on date(s) for medical reasons". Documentation MUST show that the physician was consulted within ONE day of the test. A statement merely confirming a report of illness made by the student is NOT acceptable.
NOTE: FALSE STATEMENTS AND/OR DOCUMENTATION WILL BE TREATED ASACADEMIC OFFENCES AND HANDLED ACCORDINGLY.
What do I do if I need an extension of time to complete term work?
If you require more time to complete term work that will NOT exceed the last day of classes, contact your instructor immediately to discuss possible extension.
Students who seek to be granted more time to complete their term work BEYOND the last day of the classes must submit a request directly to the Department. This request only covers the period following the last day of classes. This is done by completing an on-line Special Consideration Request: https://utmapp.utm.utoronto.ca/SpecialRequest.
Original supporting documentation (e.g. a medical certificate, accident report, etc.) is to be brought to Jodie Stewart, Academic Counselor, whose office is located in the main Psychology office, Davis 2037B or dropped in the drop-box located outside the Psychology office. You are expected to submit your requests to the Department before the last day of the term, unless demonstrably serious reasons prevent you from doing so. If you are seeking a one-day extension for reasons of illness, your medical certificate or doctor’s note must confirm that you were ill on the due date of the assignment. If you are requesting a longer extension, your documentation must specify exactly the length of the period during which you were unable to carry out your academic work.
Deadlines
It is recommended that requests be submitted in advance of the deadlines outlined above.
Decisions
- Requests submitted to the instructor will be decided on by the instructor.
- Requests submitted to the department will be decided on by a committee. You will be contacted by the Academic Counselor who will inform you of the decision.
Medical Documentation
As noted above, medical certificates or doctors' notes MUST confirm that you were ill on the due date of the assignment for a one (1) day extension. For a longer extension, the evidence must provide evidence of that you were sick during a longer period.
NOTE: FALSE STATEMENTS AND/OR DOCUMENTATION WILL BE TREATED ASACADEMIC OFFENCES AND HANDLED ACCORDINGLY.
What do I do if I miss a final exam in my Psychology Course?
You must petition at Registrarial Services if you missed a final exam. You are also advised to make yourself aware of University regulations concerning final exams.

It is your responsibility to follow the appropriate procedure and submit requests for special consideration on time. Failure to do so may result in denying your request.
