Admission to Programs
Before enrolling in any Program offered by the Psychology Department, students MUST have any "4U" Mathematics course or equivalent from high school, and 4.0 full course equivalents (FCEs) for Minors and Majors, or 8.0 FCEs for Specialists, including PSY100Y. You must also meet the minimum grade criteria for Psychology courses, and a minimum CGPA, as described below for each program.
Once you complete 4.0 FCEs you will be required by the University to enrol in a Subject Program of Study (SubjectPOSt). Admission requirements for students completing their first year of study are provided below.
Note that alll Psychology Programs are "Type 2" SubjectPOSts and as such require completion of specific courses, a minimum CGPA and minimum grades in specific courses for enrolment. There are three steps to enrolling in a Type 2 SubjectPOSt. Refer to the UTM Registration Guide for further information and important deadlines.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Students applying from 2014/15 will require Grade 12 (4U) Biology and Advanced Functions.
Admission after first year - 4.0 FCE
Psychology Major and Minor
- completed any Gr.12(4U) Mathematics or equivalent;
- completed 4.0 credits;
- a grade of at least 63% in PSY100Y5; and
- a minimum CGPA of 2.0.
Exceptionality Major
- completed any Gr.12(4U) Mathematics or equivalent;
- completed 4.0 credits;
- a grade of at least 63% in PSY100Y5;
- successfully completed 1.0 credit from BIO152H5/153H5/204H5/205H5/206H5/207H5; and
- a minimum CGPA of 2.0.
Admission after second year - 8.0 FCE
Psychology Specialist
- completed any Gr.12(4U) Mathematics or equivalent;
- completed 8.0 credits;
- at least 77%* as the average of PSY201H5, 202H5, and at least 1.5 FCE in 200 series PSY courses; and
- a minimum CGPA of 3.0.
Exceptionality Specialist
- completed any Gr.12(4U) Mathematics or equivalent;
- completed 8.0 credits;
- at least 75%* as the average of PSY201H5, 210H5, 213H5 and at least 1.0 FCE in 200 series ANT/BIO/SOC courses
- a minimum CGPA of 2.7.
Behaviour, Genetics and Neurobiology
- completed 8.0 credits;
- successfully completed BIO152H5, 153H5, CHM140Y5/(110H5, 120H5) andMAT134Y5/135Y5/137Y5;
- at least 77%* as the average of PSY201H5, 202H5 (or equivalent), and at least 1.0 FCE from: BIO205H5/206H5/207H5/ PSY252H5/290H5
- a minimum CGPA of 3.0
* Based on all required courses indicated including all Psychology courses taken
Failing to Meet Minimum Requirements
If you initially fail to satisfy the entry requirements for specific programs, you may re-apply at a later date if you meet the criteria specified below. Keep in mind that completion of any Grade 12 4U Mathematics course or equivalent is always mandatory, with NO exceptions!
Psychology Major or Minor Program
- Completion of PSY201H5 and at least 1.0 FCE from second or higher year requirements with an average grade of at least 63%. Annual GPA of at least 2.0 in your most recent year of studies at UTM.
- Alternatively, you may repeat PSY100Y5 without academic credit and obtain a grade of at least 63% on the second attempt. You will still have to satisfy all other requirements. It is recommended you consult with the departmental academic advisor before doing this.
Exceptionality Major Program
- Completion of PSY201H5, 210H5 and 213H5, and at least 0.5 FCE from second and higher years requirements from List 1 with an average grade of at least 63%. Annual GPA of at least 2.0 in your most recent year of studies at UTM.
