Professional Development Opportunities

Master of Biotechnology students have the opportunity to pursue various professional development opportunities while enrolled in the program, which help build upon the program's formal academic curriculum and internship experience.  Applicable PD opportunities can include industry-related conferences, networking events, and training courses.  The below list highlights some options available to students, though is not exhaustive; it will be updated on a rolling basis as relevent opportunities become available.  Students are also encouraged to independently source out opportunities of interest to them while enrolled in the program. 


Market Access 101: Fundamentals of Reimbursement in Canada

Date: Wednesday, April 5th, 20167
Location: Instructional Centre, Room 140, UTM Campus

Offered by the Canadian Association of Healthcare Reimbursement, Market Access 101 is a one-day training course designed to educate market access professionals on the fundamentals of the Canadian pharmaceutical reimbursement platform.  Registration is also open to current MBiotech students.  Participants will gain insight into how reimbursement systems across Canada function, how reimbursement is observed from the payers perspective, and will gain a broader understanding of the multiple factors required to successfully manage a market access portfolio.

Lecture and panel topics will include price regulation & the PMPRB, clinical models, pharmacoeconomic models, budget impact analyses, patient and stakeholder input, and private payer market access strategies.

Market Access 201: Fundamentals of Reimbursement in Canada

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2016
Location: The Glenerin Inn & Spa, 1695 The Collegeway, Mississauga ON

This one-day training course is a continuation of MA101 and offers a deeper dive into Market Access strategies. It has two main focal points - `internal' and `external' competencies. Note that MA101 is not a requirement to register for MA201.  Registration is open to current MBiotech students.

Attendees will learn about policy issues surrounding pharmaceutical reimbursement as well as how to use interpersonal skills to influence these decisions.  The event will look at what drives the reimbursement decision-making process, the design of drug plans, legal matters, patient/physician advocacy and most importantly how a reimbursement professional can successfully navigate it all using communication expertise.
