MBiotech Work Term

MBiotech students complete 8-12 months of paid work terms while in the program. There is no guarantee of a student obtaining an internship position. This is a competitive process. The MBiotech Program's staff provides postings of available internship employment opportunities. Students apply to and compete for internship jobs, and the employers, at their discretion, make the final selection.
The majority of eligible internship students are successfully placed. However, internship employment is directly related to job market conditions, as well as to the motivation and effort of individual students, and therefore cannot be guaranteed.
In order to fullfil program requirements and graduate, successful completion of a minimum 8 months in work terms is necessary.
- Two work terms are compulsory
- A third work term is optional. If a third work term is not secured, students must take two 0.5 credit (or one 1.0 credit) graduate level science or business electives
BTC1900YS - Work Term I
This course provides students with an approved and monitored work term with a biotechnology or pharmaceutical organization. The student will obtain the position through a competitive job search process. Each work term consists of a four-month placement. Job duties will vary by employer and students’ qualifications. Students must submit a report in the form of an oral presentation and complete a standardized form assessing their placement. The work performance is evaluated by the students’ direct supervisors. Students will receive a credit/no credit grade for their first work term.
Students on their second work term may continue with the same employer from their first work term, or with a new employer or department. Evaluation of students’ performance and their work experiences will be done in a manner similar to that of the first work placement. Students will receive a credit/no credit grade for their second work term.
Students may elect to take a third work term and continue with the same employer, or with a new employer or department. Evaluation of students’ performance and their work experiences will be done in a manner similar to that of the other work terms. Students will receive a credit/no credit grade for their third work term.
