The application deadline: March 7, 2013
University of Toronto Excellence Awards (UTEA)
Purpose: To provide undergraduate students with funding to conduct a summer research project under a faculty member's supervision.
Value of a UTEA-NSE Award
The value of a UTEA-NSE award is $5,625, of which $4,500 is covered by funding from the Vice-President Research. Divisions are required to provide minimum $1,125 top-up funding for each UTEA-NSE award. Research Services may request backup documents demonstrating this matching requirement is met at the time of award.
Value of a UTEA-SSH Award
The value of a UTEA-SSH award is $5,625, all of which is covered by funding from the Vice-President Research. Top-up funding for UTEA-SSH Awards is optional.
UTEA is administered through the Research Office at U of T Mississauga, and based on the current allocation model, UTM will award THREE (3) UTEA-SSH, and TWO (2) UTEA-NSE for 2013.
Duration: The award period for both is from May 1 to September 30, 2013.
Please note the following:
- The deadline for receipt of applications is March 7, 2013.
- The supervisor of a UTEA-SSH or UTEA-NSE recipient must be a faculty member holding a SSHRC or NSERC grant administered through UTM, either as the principal investigator or the co-applicant.
- Only one (1) UTEA application (either SSH or NSE) from each UTM academic department may be submitted, and within units where faculty members have received both NSERC and SSHRC funding, they will have to chose which competition to enter.
- The applicant’s official transcript is to be attached to Part 1 of the application and given to the proposed supervisor.
- For each UTEA award, the faculty supervisor must complete an application using the My Research – Applications (MRA) online system. (This replaces the paper RIS Application Attachment Form used in previous years.) MRA may be accessed from the Vice President Research and Innovation RAISE project page, Campus Business Connect or My Research On Line.
MRA will be available to UTM faculty members beginning March 4th.
NB: In order to submit the application, a document must be attached to the MRA record, so the UTEA proposal should be attached.

Applications should be submitted to the Undergraduate Counselor in the MCS Department Office (4006 Davis Building), no later than Thursday, March 7, 2013.
