Engineering program may be offered at U of T Mississauga

U of T Mississauga may offer a first-year engineering option on this campus as early as 2015, says Professor Ulrich Krull, vice-principal research and special initiatives at U of T Mississauga.

Early discussions between the Faculty of Engineering and U of T Mississauga are “flourishing,” Krull said, in an interview. “We believe an engineering presence on this campus would be a very appealing option to engineering students, particularly in light of proposed courses.”

W. Garfield Weston Foundation launches U of T scholarships

With an eye to developing globally oriented thinkers and innovators, The W. Garfield Weston Foundation and the University of Toronto today announced the creation of the most prestigious doctoral travel award in the country.

The W. Garfield Weston Foundation Doctoral Fellowship Program will provide 16 recipients each year—across the humanities and the social, physical and life sciences—a grant of $50,000 to further their research and broaden their skills and networks in a global setting.

Blackwood Gallery takes art Door to Door

U of T Mississauga’s Blackwood Gallery is taking art to the streets, and in some cases, right into the homes of local residents. The gallery’s unconventional Door to Door project, launched in 2011, is a series of roaming art events that pairs contemporary artists for one-week exhibitions throughout Mississauga. Door to Door’s sixth edition will unveil across the city in spring 2013.

Composer and University of Toronto alumnus Mychael Danna picked up a Golden Globe award January 13 for best film score for the movie Life of Pi.

Creating molecules and fighting cancer at U of T

The passion for science came at an early age for University of Toronto Mississauga’s Chemical and Physical Sciences Professor Patrick Gunning, fuelled by the gift of a chemistry set from an aunt who taught the subject.

After completing an honours undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of Glasgow and post-doctoral medical chemistry research at Yale, Gunning headed to UTM where, through his work with molecule synthesis, he hopes to find a cure for cancer.
