What does Arctic security mean to you?

At first glance it conjures up notions of border security and military operations. However, a recent public opinion survey, Rethinking the Top of the World: Arctic Security Public Opinion Survey, commissioned by the Canada Centre for Global Security Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs and the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation, showed that most Canadians define Arctic security more broadly.

Support for members of the U of T Community impacted by the earthquake in Japan

The University of Toronto community expresses its sympathies and condolences to families and communities throughout Japan and the Pacific region who have been devastated by this morning's earthquake and tsunami. The effects of natural disasters like these are felt world-wide as people with family, friends and loved ones in affected regions hear news of the impact of this morning's events. The impact has been further magnified as subsequent tsunami warnings and advisories have been issued for countries and regions bordering the Pacific Ocean.

U of T Mississauga goes bottled-water-free on Thursday

Water without the plastic bottle will be the beverage of choice on Thursday, March 10, at U of T Mississauga in celebration of water awareness week on campus.

Bottled water is being eliminated from campus vending machines during water awareness week (March 7-11), and will not be available at all March 10 in automated machines and through food service outlets. All three U of T campuses are marking Bottled Water Free Day, a Canadian initiative that encourages consumers to take a stand in support of public water and against the privatization of water.

U of T Mississauga opens campus to high school students during March Break

The University of Toronto Mississauga is ready to wow more than a thousand high school students at its March Break Open House on Sunday, March 13.

Visual artist presented with Governor General's Award

Few people can truthfully say they excel in fields as diverse as making art, writing, curating, and teaching. Fewer people still can back up such a claim with a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts.

But Robert Fones, renowned visual artist and lecturer at the joint U of T Mississauga and Sheridan College Art & Art History program, joined these privileged few Feb. 22 when he and seven other Canadian artists were presented with the nation's foremost distinctions for artistic excellence.
