The University is extremely pleased that there was such a significant turnout of members of CUPE 3902 Unit 1 at the membership meeting Feb 24. We are also extremely pleased that those members voted to send the tentative agreement to a full ratification vote. In accordance with our normal practice, the University will not comment on the details of the agreement until the ratification vote has been completed. The Union has advised us that the ratification vote will now occur the week of March 5th.

Innovative book defies being judged by its cover

A debut book by Toronto-based Asim Hussain has librarians and bookstore owners stumped by where to place the book on their shelves.

“One library classified Khadijah goes to School as an adult book,” Hussain says. “They said it was a serious subject and wanted to put it in the philosophy section.” Another library felt the 28-page book, full of whimsical drawings, symbols, prose and poetry, belonged with the children’s books.

University of Toronto named Top Diversity Employer for 2012

The University of Toronto’s focus on diversity has earned national recognition as the university has been named a Top Diversity Employer for the fifth consecutive year.

Canada’s Best Diversity Employers competition recognizes employers with exemplary diversity and workplace inclusiveness programs involving women, members of visible minorities, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal peoples and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered/transsexual and queer (LGBTQ) employees.

Top researchers to lead U of T’s Institute for Human Development

Professor Stephen Lye will serve as the inaugural executive director and Professor Marla Sokolowski as the inaugural academic director of the University of Toronto’s newly established Institute for Human Development.  The announcement came jointly from Professor Julia O’Sullivan, dean of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and Professor Catharine Whiteside, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, following a highly competitive search led by an interdisciplinary Appointments Committee.

Lab Lessons in Session

On December 6, the Research Office’s first Lab Liaisons united the Biology Department with the various staff and faculty members who help construct a smooth and successful research experience. Lab Liaisons, a seminar series open to all staff, aims to explore how the work of campus staff facilitates and enables research on campus.
