CTEP (Concurrent Teacher Education Program)
The Department of Language Studies is closely connected to the Concurrent Teacher Education Program (CTEP) at U of T Mississauga. Students within CTEP pursue two undergraduate degrees at the same time: an Honours Bachelor of Arts (HBA) or an Honours Bachelor of Science (HBSc) as well as a Bachelor of Education (BEd). This dual-degree program is a joint venture between the OISE and seven units within the University of Toronto. Successful graduates of this program will be certified to teach either at the Primary-Junior (Grades K-6) or Intermediate-Senior (Grades 7-12) levels within Ontario. Teaching stream options and anchor subjects at U of T Mississauga are as follows:
|
Primary-Junior French Psychology (focus on exceptionality) |
Intermediate-Senior Chemistry French Math |
Teacher candidates in CTEP must either major or specialize in their anchor subject. Additionally, those in the Intermediate-Senior teaching stream must also select a second teaching subject from an approved list. FRE plays a prominent role within CTEP, appearing in both available teaching streams and occasionally as a second teaching subject for students not anchoring in this area of study. There is a continuous demand both in Ontario and across the country for high quality French teachers, and CTEP at U of T Mississauga has been designed with this in mind.
The majority of the students in CTEP/FRE enroll in the French Language Teaching and Learning Major, although others prefer the French Studies Major. A smaller number also enroll in the Language Teaching and Learning Combined Specialist (FRE and ITA).
As a program requirement, students with an international language (FRE, ITA, or SPA) as a teaching subject must attempt a language proficiency test administered by OISE.
