This task force is to assist in the development and implementation of special projects aimed at promoting the acceptance and celebration of diversity in Residence.  The Diversity Task Force’s portfolio includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assessing the current state of diversity in Residence through the facilitation of focus groups and consulation with the student community. This will include and analysis of power and privledge in our community (i.e. dynamics of voice and silence). A large part of this will be listening to the "stories" of our students about their experiences here;

  • Understanding how diversity impacts the student experience, from the perspective of the minority student and the community.  This will be accomplished by researching theoretical frameworks proposed by scholars in Higher Education (and through focus-groups and consultation with students);

  • Conducting research and creating a report on diversity initiatives that occur at other post-secondary institutions (e.g. minority mentorship programs);

  • Coordinating programs, workshops and/or poster campaigns aimed at creating visibility for diverse populations and promoting principles of equity and anti-oppression through educational initiatives;

  • Addressing hate and discrimination that occurs in Residence through creative programming and awareness campaigns;

  • Generating reports to the Principal’s Advisory Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion;

  • Generating annual reports advising SHRL of future directions for diversity and inclusion initiatives.
