Family Housing Eligibility Requirements

Family housing is available to eligible students with a spouse/common-law partner and/or children, or where the student is the legal guardian of their extended family member. Exceptional circumstances not covered by the above criteria will be considered on a case by case basis.

Definitions:


Eligibile Student: Must be a full-time student in a degree-granting program at the University of Toronto (3.0 credits or more in the Fall/Winter session).  Must remain in Good Academic Standing as defined in the University of Toronto Mississauga Academic Calendar with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 1.50 or more.


Spouse:  A person to whom you are legally married.


Common-law partner:  A person who is not your spouse (see above), with whom you are living in a conjugal relationship, and to whom at least one of the following situations applies. S/he:

a) has been living with you in a conjugal relationship for at least twelve continuous months;
b) is the parent of your child by birth or adoption; or
c) has custody and control of your child (or had custody and control immediately before the child turned 19 years of age) and your child  is wholly dependent on that person for support.


Legal guardian:  A person who has the legal authority to care for the personal and property interests of another family member.
 

Proof of Eligibility:


The University of Toronto Mississauga Student Housing & Residence Life may request:

a) proof that the applicant is a full time student (3.0 credits or more in the Fall/Winter session and remain in Good Academic Standing with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 1.50 or more) at the University of Toronto Mississauga, and/or;
b) details of his/her family composition.

Examples of acceptable documents to confirm family composition include:

  • Copy of valid government issued photo identification of the student and his/her common-law partner indicating the same address for twelve consecutive months or more;
  • Legal documentation providing guardianship, if the applicant is a legal guardian;
  • Any other government documentation confirming family composition.

The University of Toronto Mississauga Student Housing & Residence Life may verify all such information.
Documents to prove family composition will not be reproduced or retrasnmited in any way by the Department of Student Housing & Residence Life and will be returned to the applicant.
