Lisa Trentin holds an Honours B.A. in Classical Archaeology from Wilfrid Laurier University, an M.A. in Classics (“The City of Rome”) from the University of Reading, and a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Nottingham. A specialist in the art, archaeology and social history of ancient Rome, she has a particular research interest in deformity and physical disability. Her current research project examines ‘disabling imagery’ and integrates disability theory alongside traditional historical analysis to consider how the Romans constructed certain bodies as abnormal or physically deviant, connecting both the literary and visual records. She has a number of recent and forthcoming publications, including articles in the Cambridge Classical Journal and Greece and Rome, and forthcoming chapters on visual impairment (Disabilities a Capite ad Calcem: Hidden Themes in Roman Antiquity, Brill, Leiden) and monstrosity (Medicina nei Secoli, La Sapienza, Rome). She is currently preparing her first book (The Hunchback in Hellenistic and Roman Art) for publication with Bloomsbury Academic.

Before coming to the University of Toronto Mississauga, Lisa taught in the Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. She has also taught abroad, leading student groups to Classical sites in Greece, Italy and Tunisia.

Lisa is also actively involved in service to the discipline. She is Secretary of the Women’s Network for the Classical Association of Canada, President for the Ontario Classical Association, and Regional Vice-President of Ontario for the Classical Association of the Middle West and South. She also directs an outreach programme (Because Classics Matters!) with the Ontario Classical Association and will serve on the American Philological Association’s Committee for Outreach in 2013.
