Milena Methodieva studies the history of the Ottoman Empire and its successor states in the Balkans and the Middle East. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton, M.A. from Bilkent University, Turkey, and B.A. from the American University in Bulgaria. Her current research focuses on the 19-20th century Ottoman Empire and Balkans. Dr. Methodieva is particularly interested in issues such as the transition from empire to nation-state, political mobilization, population migrations, Muslim intellectual and political networks, Muslim-non-Muslim relations, and Muslim culture in the Balkans. At UTM she offers surveys of Ottoman, Balkan and Middle Eastern history, as well as courses on Muslims and non-Muslims in the Ottoman Empire, and Islam in the Balkans. Milena Methodieva is a co-founder and co-organizer of the University of Toronto's Ottoman studies seminar series.
