Maryna Kravets holds a BA with honours in history from Ukraine and an MA in Middle East and Islamic Studies from the University of Toronto. She is currently completing her Ph.D. at the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations, University of Toronto. Her main specialization is Ottoman history, with a dissertation on the history of slavery in the 17th-century Crimean Khanate, a post-Mongol Ottoman vassal state located on the northern shores of the Black Sea. She is also trained in Turkology and medieval Middle Eastern history. Her research interests lie, apart from her main specialization, in cross-cultural history; post-Mongol Islamic states; slavery in Islamic societies; and the Ottoman and Crimean Tatar languages and paleography. She has taught at the University of Toronto and at the University of Guelph.
