Mairi Cowan holds a B.A. in History and Religious Studies from the University of Toronto, a B.Ed. from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto.  Her teaching and research interests are concentrated in the areas of late medieval and early modern Scotland, Europe, and the Atlantic World, as well as in history education at the secondary and post-secondary levels.

Dr. Cowan’s current research endeavours include studies of various people associated with the court of James IV, King of Scots (r. 1488-1513),  and the project “Engaging Students to Think Critically and Historically in a Large Class”, funded by the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario.
