Andreas Bendlin teaches Roman History and Classical Civilization courses in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto at Mississauga and Classics in the Graduate Program in the Department of Classics at the University of Toronto.
Professor Bendlin’s current research focuses on religion in Greco-Roman antiquity, with a particular emphasis on religion of Rome and the Roman Empire. He is also working on Roman social, cultural and literary history. Professor Bendlin has published widely in these fields; topics include ancient associations, cognitive aspects of ritual and religion, divination and oracles, polytheism and religious pluralism. His current research projects include a monograph on the religious cultures in late Republican and early Imperial Roman society.
Born and raised in Southwest Germany, Andreas Bendlin received his primary education there. He is a graduate of the University of Tübingen/Germany (MA in Classics 1994), and the University of Oxford/England (MA Hon. 1996, D. Phil. in Ancient History 1998). He received his Habilitation (Dr. habil. in Religious Studies 2005) from the University of Erfurt/Germany. Following his Ph.D., Professor Bendlin held a Junior Research Fellowship at Brasenose College/Oxford (1996-99). He taught Classics and Roman History at the University of Oxford and the University of Potsdam/Germany before moving to the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Erfurt (1999-2005). Teaching invitations have taken him to the University of Cape Town/South Africa and to the Universitá di Siena/Italy. He took up his current position at the UofT in 2005.
