Peer Health Ed. Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are at the core of the Peer Health Education Program and are essential to the development and dissemination of relevant health information to UTM students. Volunteers participate in one of six health education teams for the duration of the academic year. Each health education team consists of a group of volunteers and a Team Leader which work together to contribute to health promotion on campus.
Volunteering provides you with the opportunity to participate in a program that is beneficial to student success and allows you to build skills in team building, leadership, communication and problem solving. You'll also become part of a community of amazing, dedicated and fun people.
Peer Health Education Volunteer responsibilities include:
- developing, designing and staffing health education displays on campus;
- collecting, developing and distributing health education materials;
- assisting in the coordination of health promotion events on campus;
- developing and facilitating workshops;
- participating in campus orientation events;
- collecting statistics regarding the reach of health education programming for the purpose of program evaluation;
- referring students to on and off campus resources; and
- liaising with community agencies in the development of health education initiatives.
Peer Health Ed Volunteer Qualifications:
- Interest in health issues and how these health issues impact university students.
- Successful completion of a minimum of one year of study at a university level.
- UTM student in good academic standing.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Appreciation of diversity issues.
Commitment:
- Minimum of 5 hours of volunteer activities per week (September - March).
- Attend monthly staff meetings throughout the year.
- Attend mandatory annual trainings (Aug. 2013 and early Jan. 2014).

The UTM Health & Counselling Centre is currently recruiting experienced student leaders to help lead the 2013-2014 Peer Health Education Team. Taking on a leadership role within the Peer Health Education program provides opportunites to contribute to programs that benefit all students while developing your own team building, leadership, communication and problem solving skills.
