Carpooling FAQs
What is the difference between a carpool verification card and a permit?
Each carpool participant will be issued a carpool verification card (VC) and will have to display it on the driver's side windshield of their vehicle when parked in the designated lot. The VC card is specific to each member and can be used to obtain a complimentary day pass when a member is unable to carpool.
One carpool parking permit (CP) will be issued per registered group. This permit, in addition to a registered vehicle's VC card, must be displayed when parking in a preferred carpooling spot. The carpool CP permit can be transferred among registered carpool members within a group depending on the vehicle they are using.
In order for a carpool to be valid, the group CP card and the participants' VC card must be displayed.
Can anyone sign up for a carpool permit online?
No, carpool permits must be applied for in person.
A minimum of two U of T Mississauga community members (students, faculty or staff), who live off campus can join together to form a car pool. Additional documentation is required to apply for the carpool program.
Why does qualification require at least 2 (two) registered car owners?
A valid carpool for U of T Mississauga is a group of two or more people - up to a maximum of four - each of whom must have at least one family vehicle registered on the carpool permit. This is the only way a registered carpool can be confirmed and qualify for the carpool program.
Members who wish to form a 'rideshare' may do so with any student permit and only require one registered vehicle.
Can new members be added to an existing carpool?
Yes, new members can be added to an existing carpool at any time. Financial arrangements must be made within the respective car pool members. A $5 charge exists for each new Carpool Verification Card.
This fee will also apply in the instance that you need a replacement Carpool Verification Card for a lost or damaged card.
How do the complimentary one-day parking passes work?
Each voucher allows a carpool member to drive alone onto campus and park in a premium unreserved lot (4, 8 or 9). Users must check into the Parking & Transportation office to pick up their vouchers on the day they wish to park alone. The verification card VC must be presented at this time or else no complimentary voucher will be issued.
How does the Emergency Ride Home program work?
The Emergency Ride Home program provides registered carpool users a reliable ride home via taxi when an emergency arises.
