We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
Utilities Construction Notification
In support of the pending construction of the new addition to the Kaneff Centre, the construction of a new electrical transformer and underground conduits will begin the week of March 18, 2013. This work is required to maintain electrical and telecommunications services to the Kaneff Centre, the Student Centre, the Academic Annex, and student residences.
This work will require excavation along and beside the Five Minute Walk, and near the north entrance of the Kaneff Centre. Pedestrian traffic will be affected during the two-week period when this work is underway. The accompanying plan shows the extent of construction fencing that will be installed during the duration of this work and the routing of the new conduits (excavation).
Updates on the construction schedule and potential affects to the campus community will be posted on the Facilities Management & Planning website as they become available.
At this time, we apologize for any inconveniences the campus community may experience during the execution of this work.

OTIS Elevator Repairs
This is to advise you that OTIS Elevator mechanics will be doing maintenance work on #7 elevator located in Meeting Place of the William Davis Building. Work is expected to be complete by the end of May. All work will be done between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 a.m. Periodic noise may be experienced through this process. If you have any problems or require clarification, please contact Christine Tan at 905-569-4385 or alternatively Paull Goldsmith at 905-828-5458.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Chemistry Lab Renovations
In June 2011, the Ontario government announced capital funding estimated at $25 million for the Renovation of Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). This funding will enable UTM to undertake a multi-year renewal program of its teaching laboratories.
UTM’s first science laboratories were built almost 40 years ago and in many cases the facilities barely meet current regulatory standards. This project will complete the Chemistry teaching laboratory renovation on the third floor of the W.G. Davis building D-block.
The Chemistry department is currently engaged in an academic and strategic planning process to support enrolment growth and expansion of lab-based courses. Chemistry is an experimental science and chemical education must involve exposure to and direct hands-on experience with chemistry experiments. Investment in the physical structure will allow the improvement of pedagogical techniques, as well as more efficient use of space to deliver an effective educational experience to UTM’s students.
In addition, the space will provide for an expansion of the suite of analytical instruments used by senior undergraduate chemistry students in research-intensive fourth-year chemistry courses, by chemistry graduate students in their research projects, and by other researchers within CPS and throughout the science disciplines based at UTM.
The proposed schedule for this project is based on advanced planning to allow for construction to commence in April immediately after classes finish. It is essential for construction to be completed by September 3, 2013.
The contacts on this project are Rocio Schweigl, Project Manager and Saba AlSaady, Project Co-ordinator.
Campus Middle Entrance Project
The work continues on the middle entrance and is in the final stages of completion. Landscaping elements will be added in the month of May. Thank you for your patience.
North Building Reconstruction Phase A
The North Building, built more than fourty years ago, is the oldest structure on the University of Toronto Mississauga campus. This building was constructed in 1967, shortly after the campus was established, and was intended to be a temporary structure; it was originally scheduled for demolition after the William G. Davis Building (formerly the South Building) was opened in 1971. The building is crowded, has poor air quality and does not meet today's standards for academic and support space.
The quality of space in the North Building greatly contrasts other academic buildings on campus, particularly the South (Davis) Building Phase I, which provides newly renovated academic and administrative space, the new Terrence Donnelly Health Sciences Complex (HSC), and the Instructional Centre (IC), which provides 27 new classrooms of varying sizes.
In the summer of 2008, the Provincial Government solicited capital projects from post-secondary educational (PSE) institutions. The North Campus was one of five capital projects identified by UTM that was needed to enable full campus expansion. Though not funded at the time, it was resubmitted in 2011. This successful submission for government support described the construction to accomodate the Department of Mathematics and Computational Sciences; the Department of Psychology; new and improved Theatre and Drama Studes rehearsal studios and related support space; new classrooms; expanded student amenities (such as study and lounge facilities); and re-instated food services.
The project team consists of UTM representation from various departments and faculty, University Planning, Design & Construction (University Operations), and Eastern Construction. This project will have a construction period of about 30 months (March 2012 - August 2014), using an integrated design-build team model of delivery.
The project is now in demolition and gearing up for construction this fall. The construction area as indicated on the drawing below shows the hoarding and pedestrian flow. The hoarding area demarcates the construction zone and it is in the hands of Eastern Construction. The pedestrian walk areas comply with the City of Mississauga fire requirements; both exits from Outer Circle Road and the five minute walk will be maintained. The following are changes which will impact you:
- Food services will continue to be available in the William G. Davis Building, the Instructional Centre, the Communications, Culture, & Technology Building, the Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre, and Oscar Peterson Hall. As well, the Tim Hortons Kiosk has been relocated in the North Building too room NE 173.
- There will be no paid parking on the west side of the North Building (off Outer Circle Road) as this is now part of the construction zone.
- The shuttle bus drop off and pick up has been moved to the Instructional Centre
- The 5 minute walk allows pedestrian flow to the theatre but diverts flow to the centre of the North Building
- A new accessible lift has been installed in room NE145 and NE262 to provide access between floors.
- General access computers and printer previously located in the cafeteria and quiet study hall have been relocated to NE129. This area is accessible only during building hours. U of T wireless network is still available throughout the building.
If you have concerns about this project you can contact Rocio Schweigl, Project Manager.
