Doctor of Philosophy
Description
The key requirement of the Ph.D degree is the presentation and acceptance of a Ph.D thesis describing an original and signigicant research contribution made to a field of physics by the candidate.
Courses
A subsidiary requirement is the completion of 4 graduate lecture courses approved by the supervisor and the associate chair.
Direct entry students- In their first year of graduate studies, students are required:
- to pass a minimum of 2 full graduate lecture courses
- enroll in the 6000 series research course appopriate to their field of specialisation
- submit a brief progress report
In order to continue in the Ph.D program beyond the first year, direct-entry students must obtain at least a B+ average.
Examinations
- End of year 1 (year 2 for direct entry) - All Ph.D candidates msut pass the oral qulaifying exam.
- During subsequent years, the superviosry committee must meet with the candidat to review progress and provide advice on future work.
- End of year 4 ( 5 for direct entry) - candidates are typically asked to present a 5 page report outlining the thesis project and progress made.
- At the compeltion of Ph.D degree, the candidate will present a thesis with the consent of their supervisor and supervsory committee.
