Purpose
The Connaught Scholarship is a prestigious entrance award intended to attract excellent international doctoral-stream students. The award is open to all disciplines. Approximately 20 awards are given each year.
Value
First Year: $15,000 plus academic and incidental fees, including UHIP, paid by the Connaught Fund.
Second, Third and Fourth Years: $15,000 funding package to be paid by the graduate unit. This package may include fellowships, teaching or research assistantships. Academic, incidental and UHIP fees to be paid by the Connaught Fund.

Application Procedure
You do not need to apply for this award. Your department will nominate eligible students to the School of Graduate Studies, who then select the recipients.
Eligibility
Only new international full-time doctoral stream students, who are not eligible for federal awards such as NSERC, SSHRC, or CIHR, will be considered for Connaught Scholarships. Students who transfer from the Master’s to the PhD program are not eligible. A minimum A-minus average is required.
Terms and Conditions
- The Connaught may be held for one year at the master’s level plus four years at the doctoral level, or for five years at the doctoral level for direct entry students.
- The scholarship is renewed only at the recommendation of the home department, and is not renewed automatically.
- Connaught recipients may not hold other major awards (greater than $10,000 in value) while holding the Connaught.
- Connaught recipients must apply for an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) each year in order to be considered for a renewal of the Connaught Scholarship. Those who receive an OGS will receive only the fees (including incidentals and UHIP) portion of the Connaught Scholarship - the $15,000 cash portion will be cancelled. However, students are eligible for a renewal of the full Connaught Scholarship in subsequent years, provided all eligibility requirements are met and the renewal is approved by the home department.
- Total time spent in a teaching assistantship must be limited to an average of ten hours per week in any session, or that stipulated by the CUPE 3902 collective agreement, whichever is lower.
- To maintain and renew their award, students are required to be in full-time attendance at the University of Toronto, maintain an A- average, and be making satisfactory progress toward the completion of their degree as determined by their home department.
- Repayment of the award is required if a student is in full-time attendance for less than 14 weeks in any session.
