International Applicants
International applicants may submit a preliminary application form to the Department without the submission of an application fee.
Along with the form, candidates must submit at least:
- two letters of recommendation
- official copies of all post-secondary transcripts
- GRE and English facility test score reports
- a statement of intent
- a curriculum vitae (i.e. resumé)
You are welcome to submit any other information that may assist our Graduate Studies Committee in assessing your qualifications, such as reprints, preprints, or reports.
A statement of intent is a one-page free form letter which should include field(s) of research interest, reasons for pursuing graduate studies in chemistry, career and academic goals and if known, indicate specific faculty members whose research interests you. This section may be uploaded to the School of Graduate Studies on-line application system.
Only eligible applications are reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee.

The University of Toronto requires an official transcript from each post secondary institution that you have attended.
It is your responsibility to submit transcripts PRIOR to the document deadline. Remember your application is not considered complete until all components have been received.
Transcripts can be submitted in one of two ways:
-
Arrange to have an official transcript (issued directly to University of Toronto) mailed to the Chemistry Graduate Office.
- Documents must be sealed in a signed envelope by the issuing institution.
- Previously opened envelopes, photocopied and faxed documents are not considered originals.
- All non-English language documents must be officially translated into English and submitted to the University of Toronto together with the originals.
- If, because of circumstances beyond your control, you are unable to submit official documents, please contact Denise Ing (gradasst@chem.utoronto.ca) at the Chemistry Graduate Office.
-
Arrange to have an official transcript issued to student, that you then submit directly (unopened and in the originally sealed envelope) to Chemistry Graduate Office.
Referees are professors or scientists familiar with your academic and/or research background.
They must be able to provide assessment on your suitability for graduate studies and research.
Your referees are required to complete the Reference form and may in addition write a free-form letter. The letter must be placed in a sealed envelope with the referee's signature across the back flap. Letters of reference may be forwarded directly to the Chemistry Graduate Office or alternatively, the applicant may collect them from their referees and submit them (unopened) along with their preliminary application.
All documents must be submitted to:
Chemistry Graduate Office
University of Toronto
80 St. George Street
Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M5S 3H6.
Incomplete applications will not be processed.
If the Graduate Studies Committee considers the applicant's qualifications suitable for admission, the candidate will be instructed to complete the School of Graduate Studies On-Line Application and will be required to pay the application fee.
Applicants must submit the SGS Application Department Copy to Chemistry Graduate Office.
IMPORTANT: The applicant must notify the Chemistry Graduate Office (gradasst@chem.utoronto.ca) once your application is complete (ie. all documents have been received including payment).
Please check the SGS website for updates.
It is unnecessary to re-send the other materials such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. until further instructions.
We also recommend that you consult the SGS website for additional information.
