CPS Travel Grant

Picture of building at UTMThe Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences (CPS) will provide up to $2,000 per student in funding to support graduate student travel to attend and present research results at academic conferences.

Student Eligibility

Eligible students include all research stream graduate students who are identified in ROSI as based at the University of Toronto Mississauga (to be appropriated identified in ROSI, students need to complete and submit the SGS Affiliation Form.) and enrolled in one of the graduate degree programs offered by one of the following University of Toronto departments: Astronomy & Astrophysics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Geology or Physics. Students may only receive one travel grant per academic year (July 1st – June 30).

Grant purpose

Travel grants will be provided only to fund graduate student travel to attend and present at academic conferences. Other research travel purposes, such as off-site data collection or collaboration are ineligible. Expense eligibility will be in accordance with theUniversity of Toronto’s and granting council’s policies.

Once awarded, students may submit an expense reimbursement claim for eligible expenses incurred by the student or request that the granted funds be transferred to the student’s faculty supervisor’s appropriate CFC account.

In all three of these cases, original receipts for expenses incurred must be provided to the department following the conference.

Application process & deadlines

The application form and one-page attachment (for a total of two pages) must be completed and submitted to the CPS Main Office (room SB4037a) in advance of the intended travel. Travel must be completed within six (6) months of any submission.

Adjudication

If an eligible student will be traveling for an eligible purpose, the travel grant will be awarded if the funding envelope for this program has not been exhausted. If the total sum of grant requests exceeds the allowable funding, priority will be given to

1.       Applicants who have not received CPS travel grants in previous years;
2.       Applicants who are close to the end of their degrees; and
3.       Applicants whose ability to travel is contingent on securing the CPS travel grant support.
