Concurrent Teacher Education Program (CTEP)

The Concurrent Teacher Education Program (CTEP) is a partnership between the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) and the University of Toronto Mississauga. It allows students who are interested in a teaching career to complete two undergraduate degrees at the same time during five years of full-time study.

Upon successful completion of the program, U of T Mississauga students will earn both a Bachelor of Education and either an Honours Bachelor of Arts or an Honours Bachelor of Science and will be recommended for certification as teachers in Ontario.

  • Concurrent Education – Mathematics: BEd & Honours BSc
  • Concurrent Education – Primary-Junior (Focus on Exceptional Learners): BEd & Honours BSc

The French, Chemistry and Math programs prepare students to become teachers at the Intermediate-Senior levels (Grades 7 to 12). Each is an “anchor” subject. Students must study an anchor subject as a Major or Specialist, but will combine it with one or two other teaching subjects in any area that is offered at U of T Mississauga and supported by OISE. For the Primary-Junior (Focus on Exceptional Learners) program, students must complete either a Psychology Major or Specialist, or the Exceptionality in Human Learning (EHL) Major or Specialist. Beyond these Specialists or Majors, Primary-Junior Teacher candidates are not required to declare additional teaching subjects. Students may elect any other Minor or Major program offered at U of T Mississauga as long they meet the admission requirements and the program combination satisfies the requirement for the Honours Bachelor degree and the Concurrent Teacher Education Program.


WHY CHOOSE U OF T MISSISSAUGA FOR THE CONCURRENT TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM?

  • OISE is one of the largest and most research-intensive faculties of education in North America and the premier place in Canada to study education.
  • Over the course of the program, Concurrent Education students will develop an electronic portfolio (a collection of artifacts, assignments and reflective activities) that mirrors their growth from students to professionals.
  • This program was developed specifically to allow for hands-on experience earlier, in more contexts, over a longer period and with more opportunity to explore connections between theory and practice than other concurrent education programs in Ontario.
  • U of T Mississauga puts the principles of equity and diversity, and communication and conflict resolution at the forefront of teacher development. This is a program designed specifically to meet and embrace changing educational needs.


French Option:

  • Innovative language labs where students get immediate feedback from language learning software.
  • Students have the opportunity to study in a francophone setting.
  • Extracurricular activities such as French conversation clubs are hosted by instructors and active student academic societies.


Chemistry/Math Option:

  • Students take part in practical and field courses, allowing them to learn about concepts first hand through interactive classes.
  • Opportunities to work with professors to conduct original research in state-of-the-art laboratories.


Primary/Junior Option:

  • The U of T Mississauga Psychology Department offers 54 courses annually including 20 courses in child development, abnormal behaviour, and/or exceptionality. Faculty include world-class experts in a broad range of areas.
  • The innovative option will allow students to gain valuable skills for working with all students.

 

WHAT HIGH SCHOOL PREPARATION DO I NEED?

Admission is based on six Grade 12 credits (Ontario U or M credits), one of which must be English (ENG4U),* plus:

  • For Concurrent Education­­ – French: One Grade 12U French is mandatory. (Immersion, Extended or Core French)*
  • For Concurrent Education – Chemistry: Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Chemistry (SCH4U) are required; Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U) is highly recommended.*
  • For Concurrent Education – Math: Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U) are required; Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U) is recommended.*
  • For Concurrent Education – Primary/Junior (Focus on Exceptional Learners): One 12U Math is required – Data Management (MDM4U) is the recommended math course; Biology (SBI4U) is recommended.*

APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM

French, Chemistry, Math: Students applying for Year 1 entry (direct entry from secondary school) or Year 2 entry (after completing your first year of university at U of T Mississauga) are required to submit an applicant profile by February 15, 2012. Visit www.ctep.utoronto.ca for details.

Primary/Junior (Focus on Exceptional Learners): Each student will be required to meet the expectations set out by both the Psychology Department and the Concurrent Teacher Education Program. Students applying for Year 1 entry (direct entry from secondary school) are required to submit an applicant profile by February 15, 2012.

Students who have completed their first year of university at U of T Mississauga and are Psychology Majors may also apply to the program by submitting an applicant profile by February 15, 2012. For further information, please visit www.ctep.utoronto.ca.

French, Chemistry, Math: You will also take the required first-year courses for your anchor subject and second teaching subject. For details, please refer to the course choices in the Chemistry, Languages (French) and Math sections, as well as for the second teachable subjects.

Primary/Junior (Focus on Exceptional Learners): Students are required to take PSY100Y5 in their first year. For a listing of Psychology courses, please see the Psychology department for further information.

AFTER GRADUATION

Successful graduates of these programs will be certified to become teachers in Ontario at either: the Intermediate-Senior levels (Grades 7 to 12 for those whose anchor subject was Math, Chemistry or French), or; at the Primary-Junior levels (Kindergarten to Grade 6 for those whose anchor subject was Psychology) with a specific focus on students with exceptionalities.
