On Campus Opportunities - Work Study

OSAP Work Study Program

  • Provides eligible University of Toronto students with an opportunity to work on campus and gain valuable experience
  • The 2009-2010 Work-Study Program will run from September 8, 2009 to March 5, 2010. Hours must be worked within the program start and end dates.
  • Students are eligible if they have:
    • Qualified for an Ontario Student Loan from OSAP or received a UTAPS letter confirming their eligibility for work study in the year they wish to apply
    • AND registered in at least 60% of a full course load (40% for students with a permanent disability) for the year in which they wish to apply
    • Students who meet this criteria and are offered a position must complete a Declaration of Eligibility/Hiring Form

What if I'm not eligible?

Students who do not meet the eligibility criteria may also be considered for Work Study if financial need can be demonstrated to the satisfaction of Admissions and Awards. Prior to applying for Work Study students are generally expected to have applied to OSAP or another financial aid program and have the results of this application as the first step in meeting their financial needs. The Special Application for Work Study is available from the UTM Career Centre or the Office of the Registrar in early September.

  • Common special situations that will be considered are students who:
    • Applied for OSAP but did not qualify for funding
    • Only qualified for a Canada Student Loan
    • Qualified for assistance from their band through the Aboriginal Student Support Program
    • Are Convention refugees or refugee claimants
    • Are in less than 60% of a full course load and have a particular financial need not being met by other available resources

What are the deadlines?

  • Work Study job listings are posted on the first day of classes in September
  • The last date that departments can hire students under Work Study for the 2009-10 academic year is October 30, 2009.
  • Special Applications must be submitted by October 9, 2009.

To view job opportunities:

  • Positions can be viewed in September and October only (as of Sep 8, 2009)
  • Visit the UTM Career Centre and browse through the Work Study binders OR
  • Login to your Career Centre Online Account (select the "Work Study" option on the Work Opportunities Search page)

Will my income affect my OSAP?

It is possible. To date, Work Study participants receiving Ontario Student Loan funding may have had a study period income of $50/wk without reducing their OSAP entitlement. A higher income during the study period, including Work Study, must be reported to OSAP and could reduce your entitlement or result in an overpayment affecting future assistance. Please check with financial aid for details.

The rate of pay for 2009-2010 is $10.25/hour + 4% vacation pay.
