Get Involved

As an alumnus, community partner, current employer or future employer, there are many ways to get involved on campus and be our partners in career education! Our students value your insight and expertise, and we encourage you to engage with our campus in one or more of the following ways.
Job Shadowing
The Extern Program is a unique career exploration program designed to link University of Toronto students with experienced professionals in the workplace.
You can help students in investigating the skills, educational requirements, work environment, and the lifestyle that accompany all aspects of a career.
By participating as a sponsor in the Extern program and sharing your insights and experiences, you play an active role in educating students about your career field and the workplace.
Placements last 1-5 days and take place during February and May.
If you would like more information on this program, please contact Roxanne Wright, Extern Coordinator (located at the St. George Campus Career Centre) at 416-978-7764 or email roxanneb.wright@utoronto.ca
Students who have participated in Extern say:
"It really helped me gain a clear understanding of what is expected and what it takes to get a job in the field" - 2nd year Economics student matched with an Advertising Account Executive
"I observed the daily activities of an Investment Advisor. I joined a meeting that the sponsor had with a potential client and I observed how he interacts with clients." - 1st year Commerce student matched with an Investment Advisor
Networking Events
The UTM Career Centre holds a wide range of networking events throughout the year. Typically “speed networking” in format, professionals network with small groups of students on rotation, and then break into larger mix and mingle networking formats.
We are always seeking speakers keen to share information on their career, their industry or sector, and those willing to share advice and insight with our students.
While these events are really educational in nature, attending a networking event is also a great way to raise the profile of your organization, or network with future candidates for your organization.
Check our Events Calendar to see what upcoming Networking events might interest you!
Career Panels and Talks
Throughout the year, participants are needed for career and industry panels as well as career talks and keynote addresses.
Past panels have consisted of the following career areas/industries: Marketing, Dentistry, Environment, Entrepreneurship, Biology, Finance, Women's Studies, Counselling, Anthropology, Activism, Writing & Communications, Consulting, Human Resources and more.
We are also interested in hearing from employers who are willing to participate in panels regarding work search skills: resumes, effective interviews, etc.
If you're willing to speak about your area of expertise, please contact us today!
Mock Interviews
One of the best ways for students to learn about how to interview well is to have the opportunity to do a mock or practice interview with a real employer or professional. If you, or your organization, are interested in holding a day of mock interviews on campus, please let us know!
