Fire Warden - Duties
Duties
1. Be familiar with your assigned area, the occupants, exit facilities and the fire equipment. Know the location and operating features of the fire alarm pull station.
2. Do a monthly inspection of all exit signs in your area and submit an inspection form to the Safety Officer should you notice any problems. During your regular daily activity, should you notice any fire door being blocked open, please remove the obstruction. If any hallways are being impeded and the problem remains there for some time please report this incident to the Safety Officer.
3. Arrange a backup for your area when you are going to be away or on vacation.
B. Building Evacuation Procedures
1. Upon discovery of a fire, evacuate the area and activate the nearest pull station which will start the building evacuation procedures. If you feel confident you may attempt to extinguish or isolate a small fire using one fire extinguisher. Do not attempt to contain a large fire. If you are unsure, do not attempt to deal with the fire. Remember to use the PASS System:
* Pull the pin.
* Aim the fire extinguisher.
* Squeeze the handle.
* Sweep across the fire.
* Stop, Drop and Roll (if any clothing has caught on fire).

If there is a bomb threat and a suspicious package is found do not touch the package. Ensure the area is evacuated and report your findings to the Campus Police or any Emergency Response Team member. Do not use a phone anywhere near the package.
2. Assume control and remain calm.
3. Alert, direct and provide assistance to occupants during the evacuation of the building. Note: some physically challenged persons may need assistance during the evacuation; if so delegate someone to help them to safety or contact the Safety Officer or members of the Emergency Response Team at 569-4333. Those individuals requiring assistance should never be left alone. Should there not be anyone able to help in the removal of this individual, have them remain in a visible, safe location with a volunteer (this location will be given to the Safety Officer or the Emergency Response Team).
4. Maintain an orderly and controlled evacuation. If you are asked to relay a message to others, it is important that the message be relayed precisely as it is given to you. To prevent confusion, communicate only with those in the affected area for whom you are responsible. Give clear responses to questions and clear directions. If you don't have the answers to a question, say so. Don't speculate.
5. When evacuating, close windows and doors where possible. Check rest areas and washrooms advising occupants of the emergency situation.
6. Once outside the building, remain at a safe distance from the building. Do not re-enter under any circumstances until the building is declared safe again by the Safety Officer, a member of the Emergency Response Team or a Campus Police Constable.
7. Report any difficulties encountered during an evacuation to the Safety Officer or the Emergency Response Team.
C. Campus Evacuation Procedures
1. All wardens will be notified of the campus evacuation and which parking lot to proceed to for transportation off campus. Lot 4 is the primary area and Lot 8 is the backup.
2. Immediately check if the normal evacuation route is safe. If so, proceed to use it. If not, use an alternate route. Alert the people in the area to commence evacuation. Tell these people which parking lot they should go to for assistance off the property. Do not waste time with people who are reluctant to leave. Just report any person who did not leave or any other problem to the Safety Officer, any member of the Emergency Response Team or a Campus Police Officer. This can be done after the area has been evacuated by using any pay phone (dial 569-4333) or in person.
3. Check the rooms in your area for persons remaining behind. Should any person be incapacitated please render assistance.
4. Make sure all doors are closed.
5. Exit the building as soon as possible.
6. Do not permit any person to re-enter the building until advised to do so by the Safety Officer, a member of the Emergency Response Team or a Campus Police Officer.
Please wear your Safety Warden Vest during the entire process.
