Leading Towards Inclusion Mentor Program

Position Description:

Position Title: Peer Mentor
Number Of Positions: 15-20                                                                                                                         Hours of Work Per Week: 1 hour (in person and via phone/email)                                                               Position Duration: 9 months (August 2013 to April, 2014)

Peer mentors provide leadership, guidance, and support to students with disabilities as they make the transition to university.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet individually with mentees once a week for 1 hour
  • Collaboratively develop session activities with mentee
  • Participate in academic and social activities with mentees on and off campus
  • Assist students with becoming familiar with university resources and making effective referrals to various student and academic services on campus
  • Serve as a positive role model, friend, and confidant
  • Provide support, encouragement, and a positive perspective for/about university life and studies
  • Attend Student Leadership training sessions and events offered throughout the year by Student Affairs and Services and internal AccessAbility Resource Center training around diversity as it pertains to disability
  • Prepare quarterly progress reports including self-evaluations
  • Adhere to policies and procedures outlined in Mentor Handbook

Qualifications:

  • Undergrad (3rd or 4th year), graduate students, or 2nd year student who has taken part in the Centres’ SOAR and/or Mentor programming
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong Time management skills, ability to meet deadlines and juggle demands of academic studies and extracurricular activities
  • Positive attitude
  • Team player
  • Demonstrates Initiative, is self-directed and requires minimal supervision
  • Empathy and commitment to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion
