Register for Campus Alert System
On the rare occasions when an emergency or crisis occurs at UTM, we want to be able to contact you quickly with information or instructions.
We think we have the tools to do just that: we have developed an integrated system that will alert you to an emergency or crisis through mobile phone (voice and text) and computer. But for these tools to work, we need your support and participation.
To receive messages through the phone system, you must opt-in to the University’s system, U of T Emergency Alerts, by registering your mobile phone number. (If you have a direct-dial landline at the university, that number is automatically registered.) In an emergency (including a campus snow closure), the university may use the system to send you an automated voice call and/or text message with instructions on what to do and where to find more information. This is the foundation of the University’s emergency alert system. If you have not done so, please register with your mobile phone number: just go to https://alert.utoronto.ca/callme/ and follow the directions.
Unique to UTM, you can also receive emergency messages via your computer by installing the Campus Emergency Alert software. Once the software is installed, it will run in the background. If an emergency is declared and broadcast through the phone system, a window will pop up on your computer and automatically maximize with the alert message. I would encourage everyone to participate in this important enhancement to the basic emergency alert system by visiting the following sites and downloading the software.
Step 1: Install Java plug-in from www.java.com.
Step 2: Install UTM Campus Alert using the corresponding installer for your operating system.
· Client for Windows XP to 7 (32-bit)
· Client for Windows XP – 8 (64-bit)
Note: Mac users will need to manually add the software into the system start-up from: System Preferences→System→Accounts→login items.
For assistance with downloads or installation, please contact the Help Desk at (905) 828-5344 or helpdesk.utm@utoronto.ca.
We do hope you will take the time to register for U of T Emergency Alerts and download the computer screen software. In an emergency or crisis, it is extremely important that you have as much information as possible to make the right decisions and stay safe.
