Welcome to the

Robert Gillespie Academic Skill Centre's Calculus Readiness Assessment 1

The Calculus Readiness Assessment 1 is the first of a series of mathematics assessments designed to help you measure your knowledge of pre-calculus high school math, the background knowledge you need for success in calculus courses at UTM. It is provided solely for your information. The results of this assessment will not affect your mark in any UTM math course or your admission to any UTM program. It can help you assess whether you're ready for first-year calculus, but it can't predict how you'll actually do.

Try the sample assessment first, to get an idea of what to expect and how the assessment works. Then, when you're ready, tackle the real thing. When you've finished, your score will be calculated automatically.

Please note that the test will show your results in 4 areas:
Algebra
Functions
Exponentials
Trigonometry
If you will be taking MAT133, you will not be doing any Trigonometry, so you can leave those questions out, and ignore the trig result.

Please note that you should not use a calculator, books, or assistance from another person. Using any of these types of assistance will defeat the whole purpose of the assessment. For the same reason, it's important to do the assessment on-screen and in the time allowed. You can take the assessment more than once, but you must wait a minimum of 24 hours between attempts. This time interval is intended to give you the opportunity to review and practice your math skills before you try again. All the questions are from pre-calculus material. The topics are Real Numbers, Inequalities, Absolute Values, Coordinate Geometry, Lines, Graphs of Second-degree Equations, Functions, Operations with Functions, Trigonometric Functions, and Exponential and Logarithmic Functions.

Notes

  • You may want to have a pencil and scrap paper handy to assist with your calculations.
  • The sample assessment consists of 4 questions. Sample assessment results are displayed but do not include comments or recommendations.
  • The actual assessment consists of 25 questions. You will have 50 minutes to solve them. This allows reasonable time, even for those with slow modems or download times.
  • At the end of the assessment, your results will be displayed with comments and recommendations, plus contact information which you can use if you have any questions.
  • You should score somewhere in the range 20-25 (i.e. at least 80%) to consider yourself adequately prepared for the Calculus Readiness Assessment 2.
  • You may wish to print your results for your records.
  • Once you start the actual assessment your results will be calculated and stored, even if for some reason you do not complete the assessment.
  • Enjoy!
