Fall 2012 TA Workshop Series
TATP Workshops at UTM are hosted by the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre and the Centre for Teaching Support and Innovation and are led by RGASC faculty, UTM faculty and instructional staff, and TATP staff. Workshops are normally 2-hours in length and provide employment training and professional development to University of Toronto students employed as Teaching Assistants. Workshop Overview Page.
Participants may elect to apply workshop participation to earning a TATP Certificate, in either the Fundamentals (1-year) or Advanced University Teaching Preparation (2-years) options. For more information about the Certificate Program and how to enrol in the TATP Certificate Overview Page.
TAs may attend Workshops at any of the three University of Toronto campuses. A full workshop series schedule is available at the TATP Workshops Page.
Microteaching Workshops
A microteaching session typically involves recording a short lesson in front of a small peer group in order to receive feedback on one's teaching style. This exercise gives participants the opportunity to practice teaching and receive feedback in a non-threatening and supportive environment. Microteaching also allows participants to gain a new perspective on their teaching through simulating the perspective of the student. Microteaching participants are able to literally see how they teach through the eyes of “students”—in this case, their fellow peer participants—and through observing themselves teaching via recorded playback.
UTM Microteaching sessions will be made available for both undergraduate and graduate TAs who would like to develop their presentation skills. Registration in the TATP certificate program is not required to participate.
Visit the Faculty pages for more information about teaching and learning resources and events for Faculty that are open to TAs and Graduate Students.
